The excitement can be infectious on your First Holy Communion day and every mum knows that…

But in recent years, the recession has meant nothing but worry and stress before the big day. Parents stress over budgets for food, visitors, drink and, of course, the dress.

But the tip is to shop smart this year.

Cash-strapped parents who are being forced to fork out on expensive Communion frocks now have another option… and it doesn’t include the moneylenders that some have turned to.

Private boutiques are charging up to €400 for a dress, but there’s one bargain store plenty of mums and dads will be shopping in this year.

Discount giant TK Maxx is encouraging parents to shop smart this year as it launches a range of Communion wear for as little as €26.

A survey conducted by the retailer reveals that a massive 94 per cent of Irish mums and dads agree that far too much money is spent on the event.

The average family splashed €744 on their child’s First Holy Communion last year, according to a survey by Ulster Bank.

The lender found the usual spend has fallen by 25 per cent, from about €1,000 in 2011.

The biggest chunk of cash paid out went on the outfit and accessories, which cost around €179.

Another €176 was lavished on clothes for the rest of the family.

The research shows that most parents are able to cover the cost of the celebrations.

But one in five resorts to using the credit card.

And one in eight families are so cash-strapped that they financed at least part of the expense through moneylenders.

A TK Maxx spokeswoman said: “We believe Irish parents want Communion wear that is value for money.

“Nearly all parents feel too much money is spent in preparation for the day. TK Maxx offers a wide range of beautiful dresses for as little as €26.99.”

The bargain store has also introduced a selection of clothing for boys.

Meanwhile, the National Consumer Agency encouraged parents to spend only what they can afford on the big day.

A spokesman said: “Never borrow from an illegal moneylender and try as best you can to avoid having to borrow money or use your credit card.”
