Elton John sends heartwarming tribute to Kate Garraway and her husband Derek

Ellen Fitzpatrick

So special.

Elton John has given the most heartwarming tribute to Kate Garraway and her husband Derek as they watched him live at the O2 Arena in London.

On Monday, the couple headed to see the legendary performer live in concert as special guests of honour.

Kate’s husband Derek Draper became very ill with Covid during the pandemic, and spent time in a medically induced coma. He now requires round-the-clock care for his condition.

Despite it being a struggle to make it to the show and two weeks of planning having gone into it, the couple enjoyed Elton’s performance as he dedicated Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me to them.

Speaking on Smooth Radio, Kate explained how much the tribute meant to her and her family, including her two children Darcey and Billy who were brought to tears.

“It must have been fate as that was the exact moment Elton suddenly dedicated Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me to Derek and his journey,” she said.

Derek had struggled to get comfortable in the stadium as he was overwhelmed entering, having to leave for a breather but making it back in time for the tribute.

“We were all in tears, the kids, Derek and even the nurses. It was completely unexpected,” Kate added.

“People around us were so lovely and started clapping which was an extraordinary moment we will all treasure forever and Elton made it possible.”

After being released from hospital in April of 2021, Derek has been getting round the clock care from his home but recently had to return to hospital as his condition declined but is home again now.

Speaking on Lorraine, Kate admitted that she now feels lonely and isolated when it comes to caring for Derek.

She said: “You know, it is an onslaught – it is a long onslaught. I can see he has better days, he has worse days – he’s thankfully at home now. It’s been a long battle to get him back home again.

“I think it’s very tough on him but it’s very tough on the people around me… And the thing is, when it’s a long battle like with Derek, there’s no end point and it can be exhausting for the people around me too.

“I know sometimes people say ‘oh she’s talking about that again’ but what I’ve learnt is you only really know what it feels like when you’re in it. And now I get contacted by thousands and thousands of people who make me feel less isolated.”
