‘I have to laugh’: Kate Garraway responds to trolls after they question how she grieves

Is Kate Garraway seriously being trolled because of how she’s grieving?

Losing someone you love is one of the most unbearable things you’ll have to face in life. It’s the most harrowing loss, something you can barely wrap your head around. How can they be here one day and then gone the next? Kate Garraway sadly knows that feeling too well after the untimely death of her husband Derek.

Derek Draper was diagnosed with Covid-19 in 2020, but his health suffered so much after he contracted the virus. The former lobbyist died at just 56 in January, leaving behind his beloved wife Kate and their two children.

Kate recently opened up about life after Derek’s passing and revealed that people have been giving out about her behaviour. Everyone grieves differently, everyone who has suffered a loss will find different ways to cope and things to help them feel better.

Why do people think they have power over how Kate Garraway grieves?

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the presenter said she’s been called out for laughing.

“I got a bit of flack on social media yesterday for laughing with you [Ben] as if that implied I didn’t care… I have to laugh!”

“I’m very aware of the sensation of grief, although also very aware that I’m only at the first stages and there’s so many different stages of it all.”

Kate explained that humans are not built to deal with loss. It’s something that completely knocks you and changes your world. It’s hard to get back up on your feet after losing someone, but you have to.

“We are not equipped for loss. No one is equipped for it. Nobody wants to be able to face it but we are all going to come against it at some point in our lives,” she said.

Kate Garraway lost her husband and the father of her children. If laughing for a few minutes is something that’s going to make her feel better then what harm is she doing? We all need to try to be a little kinder in life, especially to those suffering an unimaginable loss. More kindness, less judgement.
