Laser hair removal has been a popular choice for many who want a long-term solution to unwanted hair

However, according to dermatologist Dr. Aamna Adel, there are crucial things potential users should know before committing to the procedure.

Sharing her personal experience and professional advice on TikTok, Dr. Adel offered a candid look at the realities of laser hair removal and an alternative for those seeking permanent results.

“I have been getting laser hair removal since I was like 16 years old and honestly probably in total I have had hundreds of sessions,” Dr. Adel reveals.

Her journey highlights a significant investment, both in time and money.

“I’ve probably spent thousands and thousands on laser hair removal and something that I wish somebody had told me before I started my whole journey with laser hair removal is that it is not a permanent solution.”

Dr. Adel emphasises that while laser hair removal can significantly reduce hair growth, it doesn’t eliminate it completely.

“Yes, it is definitely going to make your hair come back thinner. It’s not going to go back as fast.

“You’re probably gonna have much longer periods where you will be hair-free.”

This benefit can be appealing, but she stresses the importance of understanding the need for ongoing maintenance.

“But the key thing to remember here for anyone who’s thinking about getting laser hair removal before you’re thinking about committing to something which you’re going to have to probably do lifelong maintenance sessions.”

Addressing the cost and expectations, Dr. Adel continues: “It is expensive, it will not completely get rid of your hair.

“You will get hair regrowth, but it will be slower so if you are genuinely looking for like a permanent solution for hair removal you want to be as smooth as a dolphin from head to toe and never have to think about picking up a razor or having any amendment sessions.”

For those seeking a truly permanent solution, Dr. Adel suggests considering electrolysis over laser hair removal.

Electrolysis is a hair removal technique that uses an electric current to destroy the hair follicle permanently.

Unlike laser hair removal, which works best on individuals with dark hair and lighter skin, electrolysis is effective on all hair colors and skin types.

It’s often recommended for people with light, fine hair—such as blondes or gingers—who may not see significant results from laser treatments.

Dr. Adel concludes with an essential point for those with lighter hair: “And also just another PSA if you’re somebody that has really light fine hair like you’re blonde or you’re ginger, laser hair removal is just not going to work as well for you as it is for somebody who’s got dark hair like mine.”

So, while laser hair removal can offer extended periods of reduced hair growth and smoother skin, it requires an ongoing commitment and may not suit everyone, especially those with lighter hair.

For those seeking a permanent solution, electrolysis remains the gold standard. Dr. Aamna Adel’s insights provide valuable guidance for anyone considering their options in the pursuit of smooth, hair-free skin.
