The Autumn/Winter trends have been revealed and we’re going royal

Leslie Ann Horgan

Autumn/Winter is coming.

It seems unfair to be talking about winter when we’ve barely had a summer, but stores are already swapping out their floaty summer fare for winter knits.

The clearest direction we’ve gotten on what we’ll be wearing/coveting in the months ahead came from Brown Thomas, which held its Autumn/Winter 2019 showcase this week. Against a stunning backdrop in the examinations hall in Trinity College – who needs Paris when Dublin looks this good? – models walked on a saffron carpet that made the winter clothing palette pop.

There were grungy monochrome checks from Dior, embroidered breast plates from Stella McCartney, chic knits from Chloé, kick-ass florals from Richard Quinn (including the sequinned jacket of dreams), and graphic Frankenstein prints from Prada. A billowing silk dress with a caped back in fuchsia and mustard from Roksanda stole the show.

One trend that caught our eye particularly was what BT is describing as ‘So Bourgeois’. Featuring pieces from Dior, Celine and Isabel Marant, the look involves calf-length dresses, smart pleated skirts, pussy-bow blouses, crisp shirts and structured coats and blazers. It’s demure, chic – and oh so Kate Middleton. An everyday way to look royal? Pass the tweeds please.

As for accessories, belt bags continue to dominate in ever-smarter shapes, while elsewhere mini bags from Chloe, Valentino and Off White look cute but leave us wondering what you’re supposed to do with your actual stuff?

Continuing the nod to the 90s that’s all over the high street, Dior has done bucket hats in PVC with lace netting. They shouldn’t work but they do, in a kind of a Dionne from Clueless way.

Shoes veer between stomp and dainty, with biker boots from the likes of McQueen and thick ‘tractor soles’ coming from Givenchy and D&G, while Manolo has crystals and sparkle. Knee-high black boots with a glittering silver toe and heel from Miu Miu are literally the stuff of our dreams.

The Shoe Room at Brown Thomas welcomes new labels The Row and Ganni for Autumn/Winter, while the clothing collection sees the arrival of several new lines including 16 Arlington (see the feathered dress in our main photo) and Paco Rabanne.
