It’s official – Disney confirm character of Ryan from High School Musical is gay

It’s been a long time since High School Musical first came into our lives, and there has always been a question mark over Ryan Evans’ sexuality.

While it was never confirmed – up until now – as children we never thought too much about it, but there has been a long-running theory that the character, played by Lucas Grabeel, was gay.

The first movie in the franchise was released in 2006, and nothing was ever said about his sexuality.

With the TV spin-off High School Musical: The Musical: The Series airing since 2019, Disney now have confirmed that the theory is true in a trailer for the latest season.

Many of the original cast have returned to the series for the fourth and final season, with Lucas reprising his role as Ryan.

In the clip, we see Ryan sharing a kiss with a man and thanking him for showing up for the performance, with his classmates Chad Danforth (Corbin Bleu), Taylor McKessie (Monique Coleman) and Martha Cox (Kaycee Stroh) all also appearing.

“This means so much to me that you’re here. I love you,” he says as they meet backstage. “Gimme that mic.”

Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the news, despite most people jumping to that conclusion years ago.

One person said: “This comes as a shock to literally no one.”

Another said: “Water is wet.”

A third wrote: “i love this fanchise sm and support ryan no matter what!!!”

A fourth added: “Was this supposed to be a secret?”
