For many years, fashion followed the same pattern where major fashion houses would decree what was “in” when their latest collections were unveiled.
High-street shops would take inspiration from the catwalk, producing pieces similar to their haute couture counterparts.
Fast forward a few years though and things have changed considerably.
While we will always take what Karl says as gospel and as everyone knows Alexander’s designs are the epitome of 21st century cool, the fashion heavyweights have had to edge aside to allow for another phenomenon.
Street style is achingly cool, completely unique and a lot easier achieve than one might think.
Here’s a few basic tips to make sure you’re au fait with a trend that is most definitely here to stay.
Include at least one statement piece.
Whether it’s a statement collar, a leopard print coat or a metallic midi, at least one part of your outfit should take centre stage. This allows you to style the rest of your outfit around it. Mimic Miroslava and see how quickly the rest of your look falls into place.

Confidence is key
We know this is a LOT easier said than done but if you want to own your outfit, then you have to believe what you’re wearing is the last word in cool. Or at least act like it, Anna Dello Russo always looks likes she’s having a ball.
Enlist a friend
Even if you never share them with anyone else, taking a few photos will help you see what looks are working and what ones really aren’t. Even better again, if you get a friend to help, you’re sure to have a laugh while “shooting” and this can only be a good thing.

Trust your instincts
Acclaimed designer Ralph Lauren was at the top of his game when he said “fashion is about something that comes from within you”. Not everyone will choose the same outfit combination as you but that’s exactly what makes street style work. Once you have a formula that works for you, you won’t look back.
Ask for opinions but above all, bring it…
In all areas of life, feedback is how you learn. Whether it’s from fellow fashion fans or those following your personal style adventure aka blog, there’s no harm in asking for a little advice. That said, never be afraid to try anything once.
