Nuts can help men crack on in bed, a new study reveals.

The research found that a man can improve his sperm quality by eating a handful of nuts a day.

The Society for the Study of Reproduction researchers say eating 2.5 ounces of walnuts each day improves the vitality, motility, and morphology of sperm in men aged 21 to 35.

Around 70 million couples experience fertility problems worldwide, with up to half of the cases attributable to the male partner.

Some studies have suggested that human semen quality has declined in industrialised nations. This could possibly be due to the air pollution, poor lifestyle habits or an increasingly Western-style diet.

Dr Wendie Robbins and her colleagues at the University of California decided to investigate whether increasing rates of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which are critical for sperm maturation and membrane function, would increase sperm quality in men consuming a Western-style diet.

The best sources of these fatty acids in our diets include fish and fish oil supplements, flax seed and walnuts.

After the 12-week study on the men, the scientific team found no significant changes in body-mass index, body weight or activity level but the men consuming the walnuts had significantly increased levels of necessary fatty acids, and had experienced improvement in sperm vitality.

Although this research shows that eating 75 grams of walnuts per day can positively affect a young man’s sperm quality, it is still unknown whether the benefits would apply to young men with fertility problem and whether it can increase into increased fertility.

For now though, if your man is reproduction-healthy, something as simple as a handful of nuts can keep his sperm happy and full of vitality.
