Coquette fashion isn’t a fancy breaded potato
That’s croquettes, a simple mistake to make really, especially because many of us don’t speak French. Terrible jokes aside, the trend has been taking over TikTok.
Coquette is a beauty and fashion trend that unapologetically embodies a feminine, ultra-girly style.
The term actually refers to a “woman who flirts,” but the look leans more into incorporating playful, romantic, and dainty details into everyday style and decor.
Despite gathering steam towards the end of 2023, as we head into spring 2024, the aesthetic is still going strong – in part thanks to stars like Kendall Jenner and Selena Gomez.
So how can you get the coquette look? Here’s everything you need to know.
What makes clothing coquette?
The look seems to take inspiration from the Japanese lolita aesthetic and subculture, which first became popular in the 1990s and 2000s and incorporates Victorian- and Rococo-era fashion.
The coquette trend is the perfect opportunity to embrace your soft, romantic side, think Bridgerton-inspired colour palettes and design features without having to waltz around in a full-length gown.
To start, you could invest in pieces that incorporate bows, lace, frills, pearls or pastel colours to give the look a test drive without making a full commitment.
Accessories like ribbons and delicate jewellery are the easiest way to dip your toes into the trend.
Celebrities like Margot Robbie and Hailey Bieber have proven that a simple hair bow can elevate a look by instantly adding a playful, flirty touch.
Styling your hair the coquette way
Like the clothes, coquette hair embraces maximalism and typically consists of bold accessories, big pigtails and bright bows.
The success of Barbie still has its grasp on us as well with many of the accessories coming in various shades of pink.
Though if pink really isn’t your thing there are plenty of soft, feminine colours like lilac, baby blue, and peach incorporated into the look.
You’re not only allowed to wear pigtails when it comes to this trend, but the idea is for people to see the bows that you use, whether you want to clip them into your fringe or pair them with a chic bob.
Buns, braids, half up half down, whatever way you like to wear your hair, just stick a bow in it.
What about the makeup?
Like everything else to do with this trend, coquette makeup is an overtly flirty makeup look that leans on a monochromatic palette of soft pinks.
It’s also characterised by doll-like eyes, which are accentuated by wispy lashes and eyeliner.
Start with a flawless glowing complexion using a serum foundation, illuminating tinted moisturizer or even just using a concealer in the areas you need it.
When it comes to cheeks and eyes, this is where you can really play up all the pink elements in whatever way you’d like.
This includes saturated flushed cheeks in a strawberry or rosy hue, soft pink lips, and even just plain old pink eyeshadow.
If you’re feeling like you need that something extra, dust on some pink-toned, highlighter as well.
To finish off your flirty doll-inspired look, pop on a pair of wispy lashes and you’re good to go.
