As renowned fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent once said “fashion fades but style is eternal”.
While fashion trends will come and go from season to season, style is innate. This is why iconic figures from times gone by are just as relevant today.
Today would have been Marilyn’s 89th birthday and in tribute to her, here are some of the style lessons she taught us.
Heels instantly update an outfit
Marilyn was a big fan of high heels and we’re following suit. The easiest way to change your jeans and top into something a little special is by adding your favourite shoes, easy glamour to go.
Who cares?
Having your skirt blow up in public might faze some of us but Marilyn loved the attention. Instead of worrying about what people think, it’s easier take a tip from her and laugh at yourself.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend
Marilyn sang the song Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend in the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. While our budgets aren’t likely to stretch to jewels any time soon, we like that she wasn’t afraid to think big.
Oh so chic…
If we put on a headscarf, we would instantly age twenty years yet they looked amazing on Marilyn. With obligatory black shades, she oozed glamour.
We’re going to try the headscarf again, how about leopard print?!
Feminine shapes
Marilyn embraced her feminine curves, wearing figure hugging gowns and pretty separates. We’re going to take a leaf out of her book and shop for full skirts and bustier dresses, channeling some old-school glamour.
Crop tops and short shorts
Crop tops and short shorts are where it’s at right now which shows that trends tend to repeat them themselves.
There might be an item in your wardrobe that you love but went out of fashion two years ago. Don’t give up on it just yet because it could well make a comeback.
Be yourself
There are numerous quotes to be found on the internet purporting to be from Marilyn Monroe. A favourite of ours is “wanting to be someone else is a waste of your time”. Three cheers to that, Ms Monroe.
