On Our Radar: The Latest Tween Blogging Sensation Taking The Fashion World By Storm

Having a twelve-year-old on the FROW undoubtedly makes the headlines but is it all a gimmick? Can a child actually have an informed opinion about fashion?

The media seems to be obsessed with tweens who show an interest in fashion and in an age when anyone with an internet connection can start a blog, the number of tweens creating prolific fashion blogs has increased dramatically.

The latest tween sensation to hit the headlines is English schoolgirl Ophelia Horton.  She’s a twelve-year-old blogger who is obsessed with fashion, Tavi Gevinson and Topshop. Her blog Who’s That Girl is really cute and earnest and well…childish and it’s hard not to feel patronising towards the musings of a little girl, especially when she explains where she gets her ideas from.

Ophelia Horton is the latest tween fashion blogging sensation.

She writes on her website: ‘I used to just post clothes I liked – talk about them and say if they’re in style (looking back at my old posts I grimace too much)… but it didn’t really turn out like that… I don’t even do that anymore! It’s just whatever I like and I don’t give a shizzam whether anyone except Tavi Gevinson has a problem with it.’ [sic]

If she’s already cringing at posts now, we bet she’ll be morto by the time she’s 20! And don’t even get us started on her beauty inspiration.

Ophelia says ‘As a kid I’d always loved make-up – I used to use my ‘Baby Borns’ to practice nails, eye shadow e.t.c and always tried to sneak some of my mums makeup, but at eight or nine I kinds went off it.’ [sic]

So why is the adult world interested in what she has to say? Are people impressed with her actual taste or the fact she’s 12?

It undoubtedly started back in 2009 when at the ripe old age of 13, teen blogging sensation Tavi Gevinson hit the headlines following her constant presence on the FROW at several NYFW shows. Love her or loathe her, the diminutive fashion ingénue has carved out an impressive career in a very short space of time and has since gone on to start her own magazine ‘Style Rookie’ (a more professional version of her blog of the same name), appear on the cover of magazines including French Vogue and POP and act as muse to designers Rodarte. Not bad for a sixteen-year-old!

Queen of the tweens, Tavi Gevinson

The whole thing is a little bit Lolita for our tastes and the bitter old hag inside is slightly perturbed by the rising number of minors carving out a career in fashion journalism before they have even left primary school. Meow!

So what do you think? Would you take fashion advice from a twelve-year-old? Let us know your views!
