Missguided called out for ‘disappointing’ store sign

They've been accused of trivialising mental illness.

They’ve been accused of trivialising mental illness.

There is rarely a day when a clothing brand isn’t in hot water for something offensive. Many may feel people are overly sensitive but sometimes it’s important to call out these influential brands to clearly state that some things are not okay.

One example of this is using mental health as a fashion statement, we’ve seen jokes along the lines of ‘Obsessive Cuddle Disorder’ or ‘Mondays are depressing’ over the years and thankfully it is less common today.

However Missguided recently got called out when one of their signs eluded to mental illness.

The brand recently opened up a real store after years of just selling online and one shopper spotted a sign in the Stratford shop which didn’t sit right with her.

The sign said: ‘I’m a psychotic mess but at least my eyebrows look good’.

This was obviously meant as a lighthearted jibe about prioritising makeup but it seemed unnecessary to use the word ‘psychotic’.

Hollie, who spotted the sign, posted a picture of it on Twitter along with the dictionary definition of the word ‘psychotic’.

Another Twitter user points out that the word was wholly unnecessary and the statement ‘I’m a mess but at least my eyebrows look good’ essentially says the exact same thing.

After Hollie sent the store a complaint they responded with the following statement according to Metro.

‘I’m really sorry that the “I’m a psychotic mess but at least my eyebrows look good” sign in our Westfield store caused offence.

‘That definitely wasn’t our intention.

‘Our store design is carefully considered by a dedicated team who will assess the appropriateness of signage, bearing in mind our target audience and those visiting the store.

‘We do take all feedback very seriously and I have passed this to our store team for review.’
