A police search was launched for Madeleine McCann in Paraguay after a private investigator claimed to have seen her ‘in the custody of a woman’.

Investigator Miraz Ullah Ali Isa alleged that he saw Maddie, who would now be aged 12, in the city of Aregua and it sparked a massive police search.

Four local police stations, an anti-kidnapping division and Interpol were involved in the hunt but according to The Daily Mail, the sighting has been dismissed.

Speaking at the weekend, the private investigator told local publication ABC Colour that ‘he and his team’ had received information that Maddie was living in the city.

However, police have questioned Miraz’s credibility and Inspector Luis Ignacio Arias, of Interpol Paraguay, said that there was “no concrete information” behind the claims.

A spokesperson for Kate and Gerry McCann, Maddie’s parents, said that they were aware of the reported sighting and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
