Bye Bye Oxegen? Hello Ireland’s Newest Summer Festival…

They said it would only be gone for a year, but music fans are speculating today that Oxegen 2013 may not be on the way after all

It was only set to be ‘on a break’ for 2012 and back in all its muddy glory for 2013, but there are suggestions today that Irish music festival Oxegen has bit the big one.

It appears now that music promoters MCD are planning a new music festival called Longitude for July 2013, to run alongside the established Latitude festival in the UK.

The story was broken by The Irish Times yesterday evening, and the paper also suggested that offers have already been made to potential acts for the festival. Working with a sister festival in the UK usually means sharing acts and considerably brings down the cost of bringing over international artists for Irish dates.

Possible venues for Longitude so far include Fairyhouse Racecourse and Belvedere House in Co. Westmeath, and if the weekend does indeed go ahead as a sister gig to Latitude it will take place from July 18th to 21st 2013.

The web domain www.longditude.ie has been registered by MCD, but there has been no official comment by MCD yet.

Queen B was the big attraction at Oxegen 2011

The Longitude news comes after suggestions that MCD would also put on a festival next year specifically for Electronic Dance Music, and if both go ahead it has to raise questions as to whether Oxegen will make any reappearance in the Irish festival calendar.

Just bring back Beyonce to one of them and we’ll be happy, ok MCD? Sound.
