Luas drivers are looking to ban cyclists wearing headphones while on their bikes.

The appeal has been made to Gardaí in Dublin, following the launch of a new road safety awareness campaign targeting all road users including cyclists, pedestrians and drivers.

Luas driver Michelle McDonald explained the reason behind the appeal, saying that cycling with headphones is a huge problem:

“We have a lot of pedestrians, a lot of cyclists, who cycle out in front of us, walk out in front of us,” she said.

“It’s a terrifying experience to see people walk out in front of us, we have to react straight away to that.

“People cycling with their headphones in is a huge problem for us, and cycling on the tracks [is also a problem].

“So really we wish people just wouldn’t do that anymore, it shouldn’t be allowed. They’re not listening to the traffic, they don’t hear the trams – trams are so silent.”

The appeal comes as Gardai launch an initative for the months of October and November urging road users to obey red lights.

Gardai have already caught 155 drivers breaking red lights since an automated camera was installed at Blackhall Place in June.
