When an Irish bridesmaid found herself in the unfortunate situation of having to make a speech at a wedding in the States, she was forced to improvise.
Heather Carr was the Maid of Honour at her twin sister’s wedding and with the kerfuffle of it all, failed to realise that she would have to make a speech.
Completely unprepared, Heather took the microphone and explained to onlookers that at Irish weddings, traditionally only the best man speaks.
Heather promises to keep it short and sweet and true to her word, the bridesmaid welcomes her sister’s new husband to the family and wishes the couple a lifetime of happiness.
Then she finishes with an Irish classic:
“An bhfuil céad agam dul amach go dtí an leithreas.”
The American crowd melt as she tells them it means “Thank you for celebrating this day with us today.”
Relative Margaret Carr sent us the video and said:
“None of the Americans had any idea of what it meant and we didn’t tell them either.”
Wonderful. You’ve done us proud Heather.
