Here’s how to make a literal perfect cheese toastie, according to an expert

Jade Hayden

Bored? Hungry? Sick of the monotony of existence?

You and everyone else.

Things are difficult, life is dull, getting up in the morning is a struggle – but each day we edge ever closer to normality, to going out, to hugging our friends, and to eating delicious foods.

We’re getting there, so let’s make it that little bit easier for ourselves in the meantime – by making an excessively cheesy toastie that is sure to change your life for the better.

You deserve it.

One of the country’s far superior toasties comes from Meltdown.

Offering an array of gourmet toasties that go far beyond the usual cheese and ham combo, the café has been serving up gooey cheesy goodness since 2018.

Fancy a mac n cheese toastie? No bother. In the market for something vegan? They got you. Want to sink your teeth into a BBQ rib steak cheese creation? Say no more.

This week, Meltdown celebrates its second birthday. Still open for delivery and take out in its Leeson St branch, customers needn’t be concerned about missing out on some toastie goodness amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, if Leeson St isn’t inside your 2km radius, never fear because Meltdown founder Maeve O’Malley has shared her tips and tricks for creating the perfect cheese toastie from the comfort of your own home.

She knows what she’s talking about in fairness.

1. Use quality bread with an uneven surface so crispy bits form when it’s being cooked. I like Sourdough or Granary

2. Start with a hot pan to make the outside crispy and then reduce the heat to medium so that the cheese melts not burns

3. There will be a lot of heat trapped inside so make sure to allow to cool slightly so you don’t burn your tongue!

4. Make sure to add plenty of sauce to make the inside gooey.

5. Add loads of Cheese!

And if you fancy spicing your toastie up, Meltdown have recently launched their own signature hot sauce – Meltdown Hot Stuff.

Made from Irish apple juice, habaneros chilis and a host of other high quality natural Irish ingredients, the sauce is available to purchase from Meltdown or other selected stores for €3.85.

Wouldn’t say no, tbh.
