The One Where Chandler Thankfully Didn’t Cheat
A storyline where Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) cheated on Monica Gellar (Courtney Cox) almost happened in the ‘Friends’ episode entitled ‘The One in Vegas: Part I’.
Producers of the 1990s show cast Lisa Cash to be the woman Chandler cheated with, something Perry put an end to as he believed fans would ‘never forgive’ his character.
Cash was to be a hotel worker who arrived at Chandler’s room to deliver food when he was upset that Monica has had lunch with her ex-boyfriend.
This would have led to them talking for awhile before sleeping together behind Monica’s back.
“Basically, the scene was Chandler and Monica were arguing in [Las] Vegas … Chandler goes up to the hotel room, orders room service and I bring it up as a hotel worker,” Cash revealed to TMZ.
“And we end up talking, laughing and connecting and Chandler ends up cheating on Monica with my character.”
Despite rehearsing the scenes for two days before performing it in front of a live audience, Perry decided he couldn’t go through with the plot line and requested the storyline be changed.
“I was told that [he] went into the writers and said the audience would never forgive him for cheating on Monica, which he was probably right,” Cash explained. “That would have changed possibly the course of the show and his character.”
‘Friends’ superfan’s may recall that Cash did end up appearing in the episode, instead as a flight attendant on Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) and Ross Geller’s, (David Schwimmer) flight.
Cash also reflected on how ‘neat’ it was to work one-on-one with Perry, who tragically lost his life on October 28th in an apparent drowning.
“I was coming in, and I was new to the industry. And it could have been really intimidating for me to have… a scene with Matthew Perry, but I felt so comfortable,” she shared.
“He was really likable and welcoming and just made me feel at ease, and it’s fun you know,” she added. “It was really fun doing the scene with him and it was easy doing the scene with him.”
Perry’s private funeral was held at the Forest Lawn Church of the Hills in LA, where his five surviving co-stars were in attendance, as well as Matthew’s family and close friends.
