President Barack Obama is to use his executive powers to enforce stricter gun laws in the United States.

Last year the United States had 330 mass shooting incidents, and a staggering 13,338 deaths as a result of gun violence according to Gun Violence Archive. Faced with statistics like this, Obama has chosen to bypass Congress and use his executive authority to enforce new rules.

According to CNN, background checks on private sales of guns will become stricter and the government is to provide more state funding for mental health treatment, and more FBI staff.

Obama stated: ‘These are not only recommendations that are well within my legal authority and the executive branch, but they are also ones that the overwhelming majority of the American people, including gun owners, support and believe in.’

Many opponents are angry that access to guns will be limited, with Donald Trump saying: ‘It’s another step in the way of not getting guns.’

The full regulations will be announced later today.
