A girl who wanted to remove a tattoo baring her ex’s name has been left with horrific burns after using a home tattoo removal kit.

Jess Hardy from the UK, told BBC Inside Out that after being priced out of the cost of laser tattoo removal, she went online in search of an alternative option.

After she bought a $23 home removal kit, Jess decided to take matters into her own hands with disastrous consequences.

The 23-year old told the BBC:

“It felt like someone had poured something flammable on my arm, lit it, and then poured a kettle on it.”

Speaking to Women’s Health, dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at NYU Marie Leger said:

“I’ve had patients before who try to do this,” she says. “You have to be really careful. A lot of these techniques can lead to scarring and burns.”

Leger points out that a number of tips, tricks and products have been put on the market online, but that it is not safe to remove your tattoo at home.
