An Irish boy has died following a quad bike accident in Portugal, according to a report by the Irish Mirror this evening.

The five-year-old died after suffering severe brain damage while his seven-year-old brother is still in intensive care at Coimbra Hospital and Universitary Centre.

A six-year-old Portuguese boy is also said to have died following the incident which occurred in a town in the Coimbra district, north of Lisbon, on Friday night.

It is believed that the driver of the quad, a 50-year-old Englishman, swerved to avoid an animal. The vehicle crashed after leaving the road, throwing the children off it.

Local media reports that the children were not wearing helmets and suffered severe head injuries.

Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after 6.30pm and took the two brothers, who were in a critical condition, to Coimbra Hospital.

A spokesperson later confirmed that the five-year-old had died from his injuries. His brother is described as being in a stable condition.

Also according to local media, the driver of the quad, who suffered minor injuries, fled the scene but was later arrested. He is said to have been provisionally charged with negligent homicide and failure to assist police.
