Egging the Taoiseach… one way to get your point across?

Three students were removed from the new student centre in UCD after two eggs were thrown at Taoiseach Enda Kenny during the building’s official launch, the Irish Times have reported as breaking news.

Although neither egg hit Mr Kenny, one reportedly hit UCD’s vice president for students Martin Butler.

A spokesman for the university told the newspaper that it is likely the three students will receive sanctions under the university’s code of conduct, but that the event went ahead as planned.

“The incident took place just before he spoke, but he continued on and met the crowd afterwards,” he said.

With only days left to the upcoming Budget, students obviously felt they needed to get their political point across. But was throwing foodstuffs at the head of the government the way to do it?

The new student centre includes a 50 metre Olympic-specification swimming pool, a purpose-built debating chamber which resembles a mini-parliament, a fully kitted out performance theatre, a multimedia 3D cinema and a dance studio with a floating floor.

“It was him!”… the Taoiseach just dodged a couple of eggs flying through the air.
