We’ve all been in love before, we recognise those feelings when they bubble up again. The butterflies, the fear and the obsession can be thrilling at times, even when the heartbreak seems inevitable. Alas, we let ourselves fall time and time again for another Netflix marathon. Here are the stages you need to be prepared for.
Infatuation
So something has caught your eye and there’s a little tingle of excitement. You take it slow and read the synopsis and do some research but it’s looking good. It’s new. It’s exciting. It could be the one. The possibilities are endless.
Trepidation
You’re a muddle of nerves, anxiety, excitement and happiness. You’re filled with butterflies and good intentions but a mild caution lingers as you wonder about your ability to commit. Should you turn back now before you’re in too deep?
Comfort
When the initial hesitancy passes you settle into a blissful comfort. You’re balanced, you’re committed, and you’re content.
Obsession
This really is it; you’ve found the one. It’s sad, it’s funny, it’s inspiring. You are in love and nothing comes between you and your OTL (one true love). Friends are cast aside, the outdoors is a distant memory and all you want in life is to snuggle up with your new found friends.
Loyalty
You will love this one forever and ever, Amen.
Doubt
But hold on, it’s 9pm on a Sunday and you haven’t left the house since Friday morning. Is this the person you intended to be? Is this the life you wanted to have? It’s too much too soon.
Guilt
You could do so much still. You’re still young. Maybe you should travel. Maybe you should go volunteer with the turtles. They need you more.
Acceptance
This is you. You were born this way. No point feigning you’re something you’re not.
Remorse
How could you ever doubt your commitment? Nothing has ever made you feel this good. It’s you and Netflix, meant to be, for better or for worse. Repeat step 4 with a little more gusto.
Heartbreak
It’s over. You knew this day would come but you didn’t think it would be so soon. You regret not appreciating it when you had the chance; you regret not savouring every moment. You try again but it’s not the same. The magic is gone and it’s done. You need to move on and find another one. And you will, you do. There is life after Netflix. We’re here for you.
