It’s impossible to feel sad when you look at a rainbow.
June is one of my favourite months, it’s not because of the gorgeous weather we get here in Ireland (severe side-eye to the rain of late) it’s because of Pride month and with pride, comes rainbows (we’re getting to the eating portion soon I promise).
Rainbows have a symbolic meaning of promise and seeing a rainbow is meant to be a promise of good things to come. The rainbow flag is an iconic symbol of the LGBTQ community which aims to celebrate inclusivity, diversity and unity.
The rainbow flag became associated with the gay community when it was created by activist Gilbert Baker who wanted to celebrate Harvey Milk being named San Francisco city supervisor, he was the first ever gay person to be elected to office in California.
Now that you’re up to speed with rainbow flags history here’s a few ways to celebrate this month’s theme of Pride by combining them with one of my other favourite things, food.
All you need is a few ideas and a lot of food dye!
If you like baking cakes then this month why not go that bit extra and add some colour, nothing better than cutting a piece of cake and seeing a rainbow inside. Also these colourful treats are highly instagrammable too so get your camera ready!
Rainbow cup cakes are equally as instagrammable and delicious and you can make them in loads of different ways. Irish cake maker @sweetie_pie_dublin has some amazing cupcakes that you could try making at home yourself with inspiration from her or you could also just pretend you made them and order from her!
If you have less of a sweet tooth and still want to embrace the rainbow season then you could get creative and make a rainbow sandwich. This is not something I’ve tried but as someone who loves vegetables this is making my mouth water just as much as the sweet things.
Last but not least if you have a lot of time on your hands then by all means try this smoothie out. Good luck!
