Cillian Murphy is set to reprise his iconic role as Tommy Shelby in the highly anticipated Peaky Blinders film.

The news was confirmed by Peaky Blinders creator, Steven Knight and comes just one week after the star’s recent Oscar win for his portrayal of J Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s biopic.

At 47, Cillian Murphy boasts an impressive resume, with notable appearances in Nolan-directed hits like Batman Begins, Inception, and Dunkirk

However, it was his role as the enigmatic Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders that solidified his status as a small-screen icon.

In an interview with BirminghamWorld during the premiere of his new BBC show This Town, Knight revealed Murphy will be involved in the upcoming film.

“He is definitely returning for it,” Knight said. “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth.”

The final series of Peaky Blinders, set in 1933, laid the groundwork for the film, which will pick up the story of the beloved characters some years later.

Drawing inspiration from real-life Birmingham gangs, the series has woven historical figures like Winston Churchill and Oswald Mosley into its narrative, a trend expected to continue in the film adaptation.

Cillian’s emphasised his commitment to the project when he expressed his trust in Knight’s writing skills.

“I have always said that if Knight delivers a script that I know he can deliver, because he is such a phenomenal writer,” Murphy stated in an interview with the Irish Star. “I’ll be there.”

The prospect of portraying an older Tommy Shelby is one Murphy is looking forward to embracing and he said: “If we want to watch 50-year-old Tommy Shelby, I will be there. Let’s do it.”

As fans eagerly await the continuation of the Peaky Blinders saga, a date for Murphy’s return is yet to be confirmed.
