Debbie McGee Pays Tribute To Husband Paul Daniels

"Our life has been full of laughter."

Laura Holland

Debbie McGee has given her first interview following the death of her husband Paul Daniels.

The magician was diagnosed with a brain tumour in February and last week, he left hospital to spend his final days at home with his family. Paul died yesterday at the age of 77.

Debbie spoke with the BBC and paid tribute to her husband.

She said, “Paul didn’t know at all. The tumour was pressing on the part of the brain that processes information.

“So although he was talking and communicating and knowing who I was and everything, he actually wasn’t taking in new information, which is actually hard to tell because he seemed quite normal. He just seemed really tired.

“So the day I was told I came home from hospital that night and just I think I cried the whole night. Then I said to myself, ‘OK what would he do in this situation?’ Right okay, let’s go and find out from the doctors what we’re going to do and whatever time he’s got left I’m going to make it the best time possible.”

She continued, “That’s what I did. He never saw me cry. I smiled, I put my make-up on and hair every day. I got him home. We were going to try something but actually he just wasn’t up to it, so it was good because he just stayed comfortable and wasn’t in any pain whatsoever and then last night he just slipped away.”

“Our life has been full of laughter and that’s what it’s been the last few weeks, even minutes before he slipped into a sleep he was smiling at me and joking and singing Beatles songs.”
