A brand new baking show has just arrived on Netflix

Sarah McKenna Barry

My mouth is drooling as we speak.

In uncertain times, one genre of television acts as a pacifier for our worried minds, and no, it’s not true crime.

It’s baking.

Truly, is there anything more comforting than becoming absorbed in a show where the highest stake is if your tart has a soggy bottom? I don’t think so.

If this is also you, then you’ll be relieved to hear that a brand new baking show has just landed on Netflix, and it looks like it might fill the Great British Bake-Off shaped hole in our hearts.

Bake Squad sees Christina Tosi, the American chef behind Milk Bar, challenge a group talented bakers to create a dessert. The winning dish will then be served up to real people during their special day.

In the first episode, Christina welcomes the bakers to the competition. They are Ashley Holt, Christophe Rull, Maya-Camille Broussard and Gonzo Jimenez.

Then, over the next eight weeks, they’ll battle it out with the hopes of having their creations featured at that episode’s event.

The events include a little girl’s birthday, a couple’s winter wonderland themed wedding and a party for a woman who is celebrating being cancer-free.

On top of that, some of the creations on Bake Squad look seriously spectacular. We’re talking giant chocolate eggs, an Eiffel Tower made of pastries and impeccable wedding cakes.

Viewers hoping for some feel-good vibes can count on this show as well. While it’s a competition, Bake Squad also explores the bakers’ close bond.

In the trailer, Christina says: “The whole thing with the Bake Squad is there’s some friendly competition, but we’re still a team.”

Indeed, each baker has their set of strengths and brings something new to the competition. Ashley, for instance, specialises in cakes and pastries, while Maya is right at home baking pies. Christophe is a self-proclaimed “pastry illusionist”, and Gonzo is particularly adept at all things chocolate.

My kind of people.

Bake Squad is now streaming on Netflix.
