She came under fire earlier this week for claiming that sweatpants are the “number one cause of divorce in America” and now Eva Mendes has taken to Instagram to apologise for the comment.
The Lost River actress made the claim during a recent interview, saying that she never wore the relaxed clothing at home with husband Ryan Gosling.
“Sweatpants, no, no, no, no. No, no, you can’t do sweatpants. Ladies, number one cause of divorce in America is sweatpants. No, you can’t do that,” she said.
However, she was slammed by many who said her comments suggested that the success of a marriage is based on the image maintained by the woman.
The star has since posted an image on Instagram, with her tongue firmly in cheek, apologising for any offence caused.
“Dear favourite pair of sweatpants. I was just kidding when I said you’re the #1 cause of divorce. Everyone knows that orange crocs are the #1 cause of divorce. Either way, it was a bad joke and feel terrible if you or anyone thought I was serious. Thanks for understanding, sweatpants, Sorry, orange crocs.”
Husband Ryan Gosling also took to Twitter to back up his long-term girlfriend.
Obviously sweatpants thing was a joke. Wearing them now. That’s right, tweeting in sweatpants. Rats! Said too much! You win again Twitter.
