Easy and Effective: Georgina Ahern on Fun Fitness Activities with Kids

Hop, skip and a jump - it's simple to stay fit when you're playing with the children. So says big kid Georgina Ahern, in her latest column for Her.ie

School is still out, so maybe it’s time to grab some fun fitness opportunities with the kids. 

You could hire a bouncy castle for a day, there are great choices and reasonable prices out there so why not get looking? Even if it’s a rainy day, or weekend, they are still a goer, although my nerves are always on edge watching out for head to head collisions, bangs and clashes!

Watching might be a nightmare, but kids never get fed up and bounce and play all day long, which makes it easy entertainment for them, and for you.

To sit and supervise is important, of course, but don’t forget to get involved too! Jumping on and joining in will keep you fit and help burn fat… grasp the opportunity to have fun and help your fitness levels by joining in, acting like a big kid, and giggling all day with the little people!

I’m not going to lie… I often enjoy having a go myself when the kids get burnt out! More calories shed for you, and a good bum and leg workout from the jumping. All the exercise also means a great night’s sleep for the kids – which means one for you too!

Another way in which you can enjoy getting fit while playing with the kids is very simple and very cheap – just pick up a hula hoop and have a competition with the children. It’s a great laugh, and a waist slimming exercise all added in to one! Again, they’re having fun, you’re having fun and it’s a super effective workout too, leading to a slim and trim waist.

Option three is some skipping. Every house has a skipping rope about somewhere, so once again why not have a competition? See who can last the longest, or skip for short intervals and stop, recover, then go again!

A great cardio workout, and an all over body workout, that can help increase our cardiovascular fitness level, tone up our legs and arms and burn more calories, aiding weight loss. Games like this mean a super fun workout for you, and smiley happy kids too. It’s so easy – so no excuses!
