The scrap metal squirrel on Tara Street is going to be demolished

Olivia Hayes

It first went up in 2017.

We’ve all passed it over the years and looked up in awe. It’s a stunning piece made up of scrap metal and rubbish which was collected from the streets of Dublin.

However, now the giant squirrel is going to be taken down.

The work of art, which resides on a building between Tara Street and George’s Quay has to be demolished because of planned building works.

The squirrel was designed by Portuguese artist Artur Bordalo, who collected pieces such as damaged car parts, TVs, broken laptops and bike frames. It took him a total of five days to put together.

It was part of a wider series called Trash Animals where Artur designed works of art all over Europe. There was a documentary made about the construction of the squirrel, which was completed in April 2017.
