Squirrel charged with ‘criminal mischief’ after chewing Christmas lights

The crime of the century.

Sometimes, squirrels get hungry so they munch on some nuts or grass or whatever else squirrels like to munch on.

Other times, squirrels get so hungry that they munch on some actual Christmas lights causing the lights to switch off and plunge entire towns and cities into darkness.

Well, not quite, but it’s probably not totally impossible, in fairness.

A while back, police in Sea Girt, New Jersey thought that some vandals were messing with their lighting display when some of the wires appeared to be damaged just before their Christmas tree was due to be lit up.

However, as it turns out, the culprit was actually a little squirrel who was just having a light nibble on the lights to keep himself busy.

He even returned to the site of the crime to have another go on the lights meaning that he was, of course, caught in the act.

Sea Girt police issued a press release informing locals that the culprit had been caught, charged with criminal mischief, and eventually released on bail.

But seeing as the squirrel is still at large, there is absolutely nothing stopping him from chewing through some more wire at his leisure.
