WATCH: The Billie Holiday Story – On What Would Have Been Her 100th Birthday

Lady Day - the legend.

Rebecca McKnight

One century ago today, on April 7th 1915, Eleanora Fagan was born to 18-year-old cleaner Sarah and her 16-year-old musician boyfriend Clarence Holiday.

After a troubled childhood, one which included sexual abuse and time spent in both state care and juvenile detention, Fagan went on to become one of the most legendary voices of 30s and 40s – strongly inspired by the jazz age she grew up in.

Before her sad and untimely death at the age of 44, Holiday had created records that would live in the hearts and minds of music lovers for decades to come.
