A new scholarship is to be created at BIMM Dublin to support one of Dublin’s budding musicians.

The Imelda May Scholarship will offer one talented hopeful the opportunity to undertake the college’s four-year BA in Commercial Modern Music and is worth over €12,000.

BIMM courses offer a springboard into the world of contemporary music through courses taught by music industry professionals, including Cathy Davey, Cormac Curran (Villagers), Mick Pyro (Republic of Loose), James Byrne (Villagers), Ronan Yourell (Delorentos), Jim Lawless (Manager of the Coronas) and Mark Greaney (JJ72).

The Imelda May Scholarship will be open to all successful applicants who apply for a place available at BIMM Dublin this September through the CAO system (deadline before 5.15pm on Sunday February 1st using course code DT506).

The application process also includes a practical audition and prospective students will be given an appointment to attend an audition with a BIMM Dublin tutor.

Rockabilly star Imelda will work with BIMM Dublin to decide which student will receive the scholarship and organisers say they are looking for an exceptional talent who possesses the drive and ambition to become a music industry professional.

Hailing just a stone’s throw away from the BIMM campus in Dublin Liberties, May said she was delighted to be involved in the initiative.

“I am delighted to be involved with BIMM and especially with this scholarship. I was blown away when I visited the college last summer and met with all the students there. The passion of both the students and the teachers made a big impression on me. I suggested that a scholarship, if possible, would really benefit someone who is having a hard time but is of great talent and has the potential to fly with the right help, encouragement and learning provided by BIMM.

“I was genuinely thrilled when I heard this scholarship was going to be a reality for someone. I am extremely flattered that they would like to put my name to this scholarship and am excited to help begin this opportunity for some very talented person who needs it. Hopefully it will benefit all of us by delivering the next Phil Lynott, the next Rory Gallagher, the next Irish legend to conquer the world!”
