Study says gays & bisexuals are far more likely to be victims of revenge porn

Rebecca Keane

Shocking news.

A new study has shown that gay and bisexual men and women are up to four times more likely to be victims of ‘revenge porn’, a crime where unconsented photos and videos are published and circulated of someone.

A study rolled out in the US found that 17% of gay people have been the victims of revenge porn, in comparison to just 4% of straight people.

Spokesperson for the Data & Society Research Institute, Amanda Lenhart spoke of the study, saying just how harmful revenge porn can be to a person.

“Nonconsensual pornography can have a devastating and lasting impact on victims, so it’s vital that we understand how common this is and who is affected.

“Our findings show that particular groups  – such as young adults and lesbian, gay, and bisexual Americans – are not only much more likely to be victims of non-consensual pornography, but are more likely to experience a range of online harassment and abuse.

“This includes other types of privacy violations, such as having their online or phone activity monitored, or having their passwords stolen or coerced by others.”
