Retro Fabulous! The Toys We Were Obsessed With In The 80s

We still have a soft spot for a few of these!

Today’s teenagers may have their loom bands and Xbox Ones but the toys of the 80s were another breed altogether.

Though they may have been a little less sophisticated, our retro favourites were coveted all year and Santa was in for a rough time if he didn’t deliver just the right toy under the tree.

In case you’ve forgotten some of your old buddies, here are our list of toys we were obsessed with in the 80s.

1) Cabbage Patch Kids

Almost every 80s girl had or desperately wanted a Cabbage Patch Kid. Looking back, there isn’t anything too special about them but then, they were the epitome of cool.

2) Barbie/Sindy doll

Barbie and Sindy dolls were much less controversial in the 80s and no toy collection was complete without one. From Malibu Barbie to McDonald’s Sindy (yes, that’s a real thing), these were the go-to present for the confused parent but little did they know, the wrong selection could mean war.

3) Care Bears

While we may have moved on from many of our childhood toys, there’s something about Care Bears that still puts a smile on our face. We were a little too obsessed with the television show but the Care Bear Stare brought “cheer, love, care, and goodness” into the heart of their target so at least it was a good message!

4) Glo Worm

1982 was the year of the Glo Worm, which lit up when you squeezed it. It was a pretty cool toy but also posed as a cover for those of us who were afraid to sleep in the dark – win/win!

5) My Little Pony

Your mother may have refused to let you get a puppy but it mattered a little less when you started your collection of Little Ponies. You could line them up, brush their hair or bring them to hang out with your friend’s Ponies. There was even a Little Pony Castle! Why a pony would need a castle is a valid question but we’ll leave it for another day.

6) Polly Pocket

If it was miniature and could fit in your pocket, chances are we were obsessed in the 80s. We had the little people, in their little homes, with their tiny dogs and we couldn’t get enough. The best part was lining them up with a friend to have a miniature village. Did we say we were a little obsessed? Well we were. They were awesome.

7) Fisher Price Cassette Player

For many of us, our love of music was born as a child with our Fisher Price Cassette Player. Whether you listened to Kylie’s I Should Be So Lucky on repeat and dreamed of being a singer or used the microphone to start your budding presenting career, this one holds a special place in our hearts even now.

8) Playschool Kitchens

You watched your mother prepare the dinner every day and when you finally got a Playschool Kitchen, it was like you were a real grown-up. These days, we break down in happiness when someone cooks us dinner but being a domestic goddess was the thing to aspire to back in the 80s!
