While regular exercise is recommended for a healthy lifestyle, a new study shows that too much of it can actually have the opposite effect.
A study conducted at Denmark’s Frederiksberg Hospital showed that excessive amounts of exercise can have a detrimental effect on your health.
Since 2001, the researchers have been collecting data from 1,098 regular joggers and 3,950 healthy people who didn’t run, with the total research taking twelve years to complete.
The study found that those who ran between one and 2.4 hours a week had a low mortality rate while those who ran over four hours a week were more likely to die early.
Those who didn’t work out at all also fell into this category.
The research team believe moderation is key and they recommend a 50 minute run or brisk walk three times a week.
Researcher Jacob Louis Marott added: “You don’t actually have to do that much to have a good impact on your health. And perhaps you shouldn’t actually do too much.
“No exercise recommendations across the globe mention an upper limit for safe exercise, but perhaps there is one”.
Moral of the story is you don’t have to feel bad next time you decide to have a night off from the gym and we’re completely on board with this!
