What are you going to be doing at 10am Tuesday morning? At that time, Katie Taylor will be flying the tricolour high and proud when she steps into the ring to begin the defence of her world title at the Women’s World Championship in Jeju, Korea.
Katie has become the major force to be reckoned with on the international boxing scene and this year, organizers of the Women’s World Championships announced that there will be no seeding in this year’s competition.
Thus the draw this week saw world number one Katie placed in the same half of the draw as world number two, Sofya Ochigava of Russia – one of her main rivals.
It is reported that the two will be expected to go head-to-head in the quarter final of the competition – a repeat of the unforgettable match between the pair in the Olympic final.
Before that much-anticipated match, the Irish star will face off against Dominica’s Valerian Spicer on Tuesday morning.
Irish bantamweight Michaela Walsh will also fight tomorrow against Sarah-Joy Rae of Jamaica while Joanna Lambe and Clare Grace are both in the ring today.
Live coverage will start on Sunday, November 23rd on TG4 starting when the competition reaches the semi-final stage – with matches being screened at 5am and 10am. Highlights of the matches will be shown again later that evening, with more live coverage following on Monday 24th November. In the meantime, the fights can also be streamed online.
