Google Street View are giving you the chance to time travel – with a new button on the site that allows you to view the street as it looked back in 2007, when the site was first launched.

The app is a firm favourite for those who need a visual for their directions, and now it seems you can take a mini-break from your armchair.

The new feature allows visitors to travel and explore national parks, zoos, famous streets and local neighbourhoods, and will give users the opportunity to see how specific locations have changed over time.

The latest update to Street View will display a scroll bar which users can use to go back over time to see changes to buildings, new construction as well as seasonal changes.

Google Street View product manager Vinay Shet posted on the official Google blog, saying:

“Starting today, you can travel to the past to see how a place has changed over the years by exploring Street View imagery in Google Maps for desktop. You can see a landmark’s growth from the ground up, like the Freedom Tower in New York city or experience different seasons and see what it would be like to cruise Italian roadways in both summer and winter.”

Google added that they’re hoping the tourism and beauty hotspot features will attract more users to the service.
