One Indian charity has taken its own spin on the ice bucket challenge by launching a drive to feed the community using the ‘rice bucket challenge’.

Journalist Manju Latha Kalanidihi hopes to use the popularity of the ice bucket challenge by creating awareness of the poverty and hunger divide in the country.

The idea simply asks people to cook or buy a bucket of rice and donate it to the poor of India. The Facebook group has built a community of 13,000 in two days, with pledges from Europe signing up to make donations.

The idea came in response to poverty and hunger levels in India, with activists hoping the rice bucket challenge will see an immediate effect in helping alleviate some of the immediate needs of local communities.
