Need to boost your energy a little?
If you are constantly waking up feeling like you literally went to sleep four seconds ago, we know how you feel.
Between hectic days and not enough hours of shuteye, we are always on the hunt for anything that will help keep us awake. (Other than reaching for that third cup of coffee, that is!).
But if you are worried about surviving on caffeine alone too, fear not, as experts assure us there are other ways to boost your energy too. The bonus? Picking any of these over coffee will not only have a long-lasting positive effect on your day, but indeed the rest of your life, too.
Here are ten foods to eat that will absolutely boost your energy – and get you ready for whatever your day (and your kids!) throw at you:
1. Dark Chocolate
Yeah! Were you aware that eating dark chocolate one to two times per week is actually good for you? It contains the natural stimulant theobromine (similar to coffee) for energizing and mood-boosting, and can even help control blood pressure and fight against those bad cells? Remember though: everything in moderation!
Filled with fiber, B vitamins and potassium, bananas contain natural energy – plus, they taste great too, so it’s a win/win!. ‘Nanas are a great snack to grab on the go, and did you try eating some alongside some peanut butter for added protein? Y-UM!
Woah, who knew?! Popcorn is high in fiber and carbohydrates (without the butter, though). It’s a whole-grain snack that will make you feel full and guilt-free!
Proper hydration is the key to a healthy body, and studies have shown that starting your day out with lemon-infused water will help increase your metabolism and energy. Also, sometimes, we confuse hunger with dehydration, so make sure you keep a water bottle near you throughout the day.
5. Green Tea
Caffeine from green tea feels steadier than the spike/crash of coffee, and on top of that, Green tea contains L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes relaxation and energy.
Egg yolks are naturally rich in B vitamins, which help convert energy and build strong bones. Bonus: eggs are one of the best sources of protein, so make sure to chow down on them after an intense run or gym work-out!
Loaded with antioxidants, blueberries are a proper superfood that will help with cognitive function and mental agility, according to nutritionists.
8. Whole Grains
Whole grains do contain carbs, but they’re the complex kind that provide energy throughout the day.
Spinach helps increase the efficiency of our mitochondria, which help produce energy in our cells. The same goes for other dark, leafy greens too. Try some spinach in your next smoothie – we promise you won’t even know it’s in there!
Almonds are packed with good fats (which help you stay full) and include fiber and nutrients. Remember: don’t over-do it—almonds, like other nuts, are high in fat.
