Everyone had a bit of election fever yesterday and Mitt Romney and Barack Obama fought it out in the polls but no one more so than the heavily pregnant Galicia Malone.

When Galicia’s water broke yesterday, she knew it was a race against time to get to the polling station to cast her vote for Barack Obama before welcoming her new baby.

The 21-year-old had been in labour for many hours and her contractions were just four minutes apart when she voted for President elect Mr. Obama in the state of Illinois.

Speaking to Chicago’s WBBM radio, the first-time voter revealed that she did everything possible to delay her baby’s birth to make sure she could vote for her favourite candidate yesterday.

“I never voted before so this made a major difference in my life,” she said.

“And I wanted this to be a stepping-stone for my daughter.

“I was just trying to read [the ballot paper] and breathe, read and breathe,’ she added.

“That’s what I kept telling myself.”

The manager of Galicia’s local polling station David Orr thanked the new mum for her dedication to America.

“My hat goes off to Galicia for not letting anything get in the way of voting,” he said.

“What a terrific example she is showing for the next generation.

“If only all voters showed such determination to vote.”

Galicia welcomed a beautiful baby girl soon after casting her all important vote!
