WATCH: The Time Traveler’s Wife is getting a new TV series

The beloved 2009 rom-com is coming back to our screens in a very exciting way.

HBO has secured the rights to make a six-part mini-series based on The Time Traveler's Wife. First released in 2009 starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams it grossed $19.2 million in the box office on its opening weekend and has remained a cult classic ever since. The film is based on Audrey Niffenegger's 2003 novel and the series is expected to loosely follow the same plot. [/caption] You can watch the much-anticipated trailer here. The film detailed Claire Abshire (Rachel McAdams) falling head over heels for Chicago librarian Henry DeTamble (Eric Bana) before the pair decide to marry each other. However, their relationship is often interrupted by Henry's paranormal genetic disorder that causes him to time travel at any given moment. Screenwriter Steven Moffat who has worked on shows such as Doctor Who and Sherlock will write the series. He was already a big fan saying; “I read Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife many years ago, and I fell in love with it. In fact, I wrote a Doctor Who episode called ‘The Girl in the Fireplace’ as a direct response to it." It is to be directed by David Nutter who has won a Primetime Emmy Award for his directing role on Game of Thrones. Rose Leslie who starred as Ygritte in Game of Thrones will take the role of Claire. She is no stranger to the small screen as she previously worked on shows such as Downton Abbey and Luther.

Theo James of Divergent will star as Claire's time-traveling husband Henry, who also made appearances on Downton Abbey. The show will focus on how the pair struggle to make the relationship work as Henry is pulled away into different time dimensions. The synopsis has dubbed it "an intricate and magical love story" so we are sure to be in for a lot of romantic twists and turns. The series is created in conjunction with Universal Studios who still has the rights to the story. HBO received the go-ahead to make the show in 2018. Although there has not been a definite release date as of yet it is expected to hit screens this May with Irish fans being able to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW.
