“It was supposed to be our first proper scan.”
Laura Whitmore has said that she “didn’t know how to react” after experiencing a miscarriage.
The Love Island presenter and partner Iain Stirling were attending their first scan two years ago when they were informed that there was no heartbeat.
Speaking on her podcast Castaway, Laura told friend and comedian Katherine Ryan of how she felt at the 12 week scan. She and Iain had been due to attend Ryan’s gig later that evening.
“I’ve never told you this, but I remember in my situation about two years ago when we went for our scan, it was supposed to be our first proper scan, and it was that night I was going to see your show,” she said.
“We had gone to go for the scan and there was no heartbeat.”
“Was I supposed to be upset? Was I supposed to be ‘ok ok’ and move on? (…) I remember Iain saying to me, ‘Should we just go home,’ and I said, ‘I can’t.'”
Laura said that it was “important” for her to see Katherine’s gig.
“I want to have a little bit of escapism for an hour,” she said. “I want to laugh and I want to watch a show and then I’ll deal with it.”
The former MTV presenter first opened up about her miscarriage last year.
In a personal essay for Hot Press magazine, she asked: “Was I allowed to be emotional?”
“In the room I could see the outline of what looked like a jelly baby – just like in the movies,” she wrote. “Then silence. ‘I’m sorry there’s no heart-beat.’
“I wasn’t sure how I was supposed to react. Should I cry? Was I allowed be emotional for something unplanned?
“The things that go through your mind: actually, I had just spent two hours planning with the midwife earlier that day. That handbrake again. Things spinning.”
Laura and Iain have been in a relationship since 2017.
