Do You Want to Change the Shape of Your Face?

Kim Kardashian is known for shading here and highlighting there to create a different face shape and make the most of her best features. Here's our guide on how you can do it too...

If Kim Kardashian can do it, we reckon we can do it too! And we’re not talking about making a sex tape, we’re talking about changing the shape of our face.

Face contouring is a new trend that can be used to do lots of things from creating a thinner face to reducing the size of your nose.

For each face shape, there are certain areas that you can contour and highlight to create the illusion of a different face shape.

But before we tell you what those are, you will need three things: a foundation that matches your skin tone exactly; a product that is two shades darker but with the same base colour as your foundation; and another product that is two shades lighter but with the same base colour as your foundation.

The contouring and highlighting products can be foundations, powder or creams. And the basic rules are that contouring decreases and hides while highlighting draws attention to features.

So now, without further adieu, it’s time to get contouring!

If you have a… TRIANGLE FACE which is narrow at the top and wide at the bottom, it is best to contour your cheeks and jawline. Highlight the centre features of your face including your forehead, your chin and under your eyes.

Singer Christina Milian has a triangular-shaped face.

If you have a… HEART FACE you will most likely want to disguise the width of your forehead. To do this, apply your darker, contour product to your temples. You can also use this to create cheekbones by putting it on your cheeks (not your cheekbones). Highlight your forehead and chin too.

Reese Witherspoon’s heart shape makes her stand out in Hollywood.

If you have a… SQUARE FACE, contour the corners of your face (both head and jawline). By darkening these areas, they will appear softer and less prominent. Highlight your forehead, chin and under your eyes to draw attention to the centre of your face.

Actress Angelina Jolie is known for her defined, angular, facial features.

If you have a… ROUND FACE you should apply the darker products to your temples, cheeks and jawline. This will help to create the illusion of angles and face structure. Draw attention to your chin and forehead to accentuate these more-defined areas.

American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson has a round face.

If you have an… OVAL FACE you are one very lucky lady because this face shape doesn’t need any sort of contouring. All you really have to do is highlight your forehead, under your eyes and your chin. Nature takes care of the rest, although feel free to experiment with different effects.

Jessica Alba has very little work to do with her oval face.

Whatever you do, make sure that you blend, blend and blend some more! Also practice makes perfect so don’t be put off if it takes time to get your desired effect.

You can also apply these techniques to specific features so if you feel that your nose is slightly oversized (which we’re sure it isn’t), contour it and highlight another feature of your face.
