Best Budget Beauty Buys of 2014

Here's what we rated this year.

Cathy Donohue

While we’re no strangers to splurging on the odd beauty buy, our day to day make-up bags tend to include inexpensive brands.

Essence, Catrice, NYC, Rimmel and Maybelline have launched some brilliant products this year, ensuring you get value for money.

We’ve already discussed our favourite luxury buys of 2014 and now it’s time to have a look at our budget buys.

NYC Big Bold Angel Lash, €3.49

NYC is definitely one of our go-to brands when it comes to budget beauty purchases. This mascara was launched this year and if you’re looking for big, voluminous, lengthy lashes, you really can’t go wrong with this. It’s just over the price of a coffee and will last you for a few months even when worn daily. We can’t praise this product enough.

Maybelline Master Graphic Eyeliner, €8.29

We love a good eyeliner although we will admit the liquid variety can be difficult to apply at times. While pencil is our go-to, this graphic eyeliner is a definite game changer. The thick nib means you can draw on feline flicks with ease, long gone are the days of watery black lines ending up everywhere but your eye.

Rimmel Provocalips Transfer Proof Lipsticks, €8.49

These were released a couple of months ago and we love the bright packaging. One side features a lip lacquer and the other, a clear top coat which does nothing to change the texture or shade of the lip colour. There are 8 shades in total (Kiss Me You Fool and I’ll Call You are our favourites) and for €8.49, you might find yourself lusting after more than one. Great colour pay-off, long-lasting and within budget = happy days.

Essence All About Nude Eyeshadow Palette, €4.39

You really can’t go wrong with a nude eyeshadow palette, especially at such a reasonable price. The shades in the below compact are easily applied and blend together really well.  You can get a simple look with one shade or mix a few for a smoky eye, perfect for a Christmas night out.

Catrice 3 in 1 Skin Tone Adapting Make Up, €7.99

A foundation that adapts to your skin tone sounds like a dream product, particularly as €8 is a bargain for a base. Not only does it provide decent coverage, it moisturises and smoothes the skin. You might find that you need something a little heavier for night but it is perfect when you need to wear make-up and want to let your skin breathe at the same time.
