France bans the use of meat-terms on veggie items, and people are confused

Say au revoir to veggie burgers!

This is both interesting… and a little bit odd.

France has just banned the use of meat-terms on vegetarian items… so everything from veggie burgers, to burritos and vegetarian ‘bacon’ will now not be allowed.

Why? Well, nobody really knows. The government claims that it ‘misleads shoppers’, but some are saying that using such terms are ‘false claims’ while others say the government is worried vegetarianism is becoming too popular in the country.

Mr Moreau, a farmer and member of President Macron’s En Marche! party tweeted: “It is important to fight against false claims: our products must be designated correctly: the terms #cheese or #steak will be reserved for products of animal origin!”

If a food shop, restaurant or supplier breaks the ban, they could be fined up to €300,000. Yeah, steep.

Wendy Higgins, of Humane Society International in the UK, said: “It’s a shame that instead of embracing vegan and vegetarian food, France has adopted a position of defensive paranoia.

“But ultimately it won’t stop the rise of compassionate eating because the delicious, nutritious, Earth-friendly and ethical benefits will prevail regardless of what you call the products.”

BUT saying all that… people are quite confused with the decision, because… well, we all know what we’re eating and what way we want our food.

One person on Twitter nailed it by saying: “This is ridiculous. I can tell you now no carnivore has ever bought veggie sausages or Quorn thinking they were buying meat.”

Yeah, totally.
