College Green in Dublin to be pedestrianised this weekend

A traffic-free trial of College Green is being tested this Sunday.

College Green in Dublin is set to be pedestrianised this Sunday.

The area will be given exclusively to pedestrians and cyclists between 7am and 7pm in what is the first of three trials of a similar nature.

Dublin City Council is putting on a range of family-friendly events in the area to showcase the potential of the space if it were permanently pedestrianised.

These events include face-painting, street performers and a number of other acts.

The trial will result in a number of changes to bus routes that travel through College Green, so delays are to be expected.

In a statement issued to JOE back in June, Dublin Chamber welcomed the news and stated the majority of businesses are in favour of the move.

This is the first of three trials that will take place, the others going down on 28 July and 4 August.

‘The idea of trial days was one first put forward by Dublin Chamber in late 2018,” Graeme McQueen of Dublin Chamber said.

“We’re pleased to see the Council taking the idea up. Trial days can help get more people and businesses on board with the idea – giving them a real chance to experience first hand what a plaza would be like.

“College Green is a really key space in the city, particularly from a transport point of view. It also boasts some stunning buildings, which at the moment we don’t get to fully appreciate due to how frantic the area is.

“The trial Sundays will give everyone a chance to pause and take it all in and really get a taste for what might be possible.”
