Ex-Sheffield United, Manchester City, and Norwich player Ched Evans has had his rape conviction overturned at the Court of Appeal in London, according to BBC News.

The 27-year-old had served half of his five-year sentence for the rape of a 19-year-old from 2012 to October 2014 when he was released.

Evans had allegedly raped the woman at a Premier Inn near Rhyl, in Wales in 2012.

Evans’s solicitor Shaun Draycott said: “Ched Evans is extremely grateful that the court of appeal has ruled that his conviction for rape was unsafe and should be quashed.”

It is reported that the judge presiding over the court, Lady Justice Hallett had said the panel had heard ‘fresh evidence’ during the appeal hearing last month.

Mr. Evans, who has not played football since his release, has to face a retrial, a date for which has not been set.
