One year ago today, more than 200 girls were kidnapped from their school in Chibok, Nigeria.

Believed to have been kidnapped by militant group Boko Haram, the girls disappeared at midnight.

A worldwide campaign started on social media #BringBackOurGirls, with celebrities, presidents and sports personalities rallying behind the cause.

All to no avail.

Today, one year on, the girls are still missing.

Michelle Obama highlighted the campaign online.

Ceremonies are being held around the world to mark the date.

“It is horrific that the girls have spent an entire year captive away from their families, just because they wanted an education and to learn,” said Gordon Brown, UN Special Envoy for Global Education.

“This has been a devastating year for schoolchildren. Not since World War II have so many girls and boys become refugees across so many borders.

“Never outside the context of world wars have schools in so many countries been subject to so many terror attacks.”
