One Direction have earned yet another accolade this week as Billboard announced that the five-piece have won the Billboard’s Top Artist of the Year Award.
This is the first time a group have won the award since Destiny’s Child back in 2001 and only the ninth group to be crowned with the owner since it began in 1981.
The chart-topping band are the fifth non-American born artist to top the poll, following the likes of Adele (2011, 2012), Alanis Morissette (1996), Ace of Base (1994) and George Michael (1988).
The award was based on chart performance from December 7th, 2013 to November 29th of this year over the Billboard 200 albums and the Billboard Hot 100 singles. The band’s success came from the performance of their Midnight Memories album and their performance on social media.
Meanwhile their Where We Are tour has finished as the year’s top tour, grossing $290 million.
